The projects are being deployed in the Bronx and Staten Island, population-dense parts of the city.

An image provided along with the announcement, above, shows what look like Tesla Megapack grid-scale BESS products being used by Eaton for at least one of the projects.

As well as providing the BESS units, Eaton will provide power system studies and equipment including switchgear, switchboards and transformers.

The announcement didn’t say when the 10 projects will be coming online.

New York State is looking to increase energy storage deployments as part of decarbonising its energy system and reducing dependence on highly polluting gas peaker plants located predominantly lower-income populations.

Several projects were recently approved by state body the New York City Industrial Development Agency (NYCIDA) including a like-for-like gas turbine replacer, while in January utility New York Power Authority (NYPA) issued a request for information (RFI) for clean energy and storage development opportunities.

The state is targeting 6GW of energy storage online by 2030. However, a handful of fires at lithium-ion BESS projects have affected trust in the technology, we heard at Solar Media’s Energy Storage Summit 2024 in March, with a governor-led working group on BESS safety set up in response.
